The Upper Lake

It was in the 11th century that under the commands of Raja Bhoj, this lake was built. Yes, this extreme natural beauty is indeed a manmade wonder! It covers a total area of about 36sq km. There is a picturesque royal garden that surrounds this entire area and even the beautiful Kamla Park. Not only is it renowned for its scenic pleasure, there are a number of water sports that you can take part in while enjoying its cool breeze. You can go parasailing, kayaking, canoeing and even water skiing on the tranquil waters of the Upper Lake or as it is more popularly known, locally, the Bada Talaab.

The Lower Lake

Much later in the year, 1794, Chhote Khan took up the responsibility of constructing another lake to the east of the Bada Talaab, which is today known as the Lower Lake or the Chhota Talaab. There is an over bridge, which known as the Lower Lake Bridge or the Pul Pukhta that separates these two lakes.

Since both the lakes lie side by side, you can visit them in a single day. There are many hotels in bhopal india located near the two lakes, and it is best to book rooms in one of them since then you will be able to enjoy the beauty of these two lakes as and when you wish. These lakes are also the main source of water supply of the city, covering about 40% of the total water supply! These two lakes when combined together, they are popularly referred to as the “Bhoj Wetland.”

Not only are the lakes beautiful but are playing a major role in the functioning of the city as well. No matter what, take time out to visit these two if you cannot cover all the fourteen.
